Ailing shoulder has Pronk on DL

The decision to put Travis Hafner on the disabled list before Wednesday night's game was quickly made. So quickly that an early lineup posted outside the Indians' clubhouse at 3:30 p.m. had him starting at DH.

Hafner went on the 15-day DL because of soreness and fatigue in his surgically repaired right shoulder. Left-hander Rich Rundles was called-up from Class AAA Columbus, giving manager Eric Wedge a 14-man pitching staff, including nine relievers, after the bullpen went seven innings in Tuesday's 9-8 victory over Boston.

Wedge said the 14-man pitching staff wouldn't last longer than Wednesday's game. He said a move, or moves, would be made today to get the staff back to 13.

The most likely move would have outfielder David Dellucci returning from Columbus from a rehabilitation assignment to replace Rundles. Wedge initially said other moves could be made, leading to speculation that Matt LaPorta, Luis Valbuena or Josh Barfield could be promoted from Columbus.

It's now believed the move will be limited to two players, one arriving and one leaving.

"Travis has been having some soreness and fatigue in that shoulder again," said Wedge. "We knew this may have been something coming our way. It's not uncommon when you work from spring training to the regular season after a surgery.

"I don't think it's anything serious. Hopefully, it's just a two-week thing."

Wedge said Dr. James Andrews, who did the original surgery Oct. 14, will examine Hafner next week.

Hafner is hitting .270 (17-for-63) with four homers and eight RBI in 17 games. He was not available for comment.

"I've been noticing something in his swing the last two or three days," said Wedge. "I talked to [hitting coach] Derek Shelton and [head trainer] Lonnie Shelton about it. We just wanted to nip it in the bud and get him back on track.

"It just wasn't the same swing when he's healthy and snapping the bat through the strike zone. We've got to do the best job we can to have the best lineup out there for 162 games. If we have to do this for the next 2? weeks to have him for the last 4? months, that's what we'll do."

Last season Hafner played only 57 games because of pain and weakness in the shoulder.

Hafner made 15 starts in the cleanup spot this season. Shin-Soo Choo made his sixth start there Wednesday. Jhonny Peralta flourished in the No. 4 spot last year when Hafner and Victor Martinez were injured, but he's started slowly this year.

Wedge will have no shortage of DH candidates, especially if Dellucci is activated.

First cut: Adam Miller underwent the first part of a complicated surgery Tuesday on his right middle finger. Dr. Tom Graham repaired the flexor pulley system in the finger at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. The operation lasted 2? hours.

Miller will have a second operation in about three months. In that operation, the flexor tendon will be reconstructed. Recovery time, starting with Tuesday's operation, could take as long as nine months.

Last season Miller had surgery on the same finger.

Quick read: Ben Francisco never faced Brad Penny before Tuesday.

He hit into a force play in his first at-bat that third baseman Mike Lowell threw away. Francisco hit a three-run homer in his second at-bat to tie the score, 7-7.

"I hit an inside fastball that I was able to keep fair [down the left-field line]," said Francisco.

Francisco, like the Indians , has started the season slowly.

"I've made a couple of adjustments," he said. "I'm getting ready to hit quicker in the batter's box. Everybody gets overanxious in April. You have to stay patient. It's a long, long season. That's what we're trying to do as a team as well.

Finally: Trevor Crowe did not play Wednesday and went 1-for-11 during this homestand.
