DENVER (AP) - Cleveland Indians infielder Josh Barfield underwent surgery to repair an injured ligament on the left middle finger on Tuesday and the team said he will be out six to eight weeks.
"Josh saw Dr. Tom Graham yesterday in Baltimore," Cleveland trainer Lonnie Soloff said Tuesday. "His opinion was the best way to return Josh to game activities the most quickly would be to be with surgical intervention."The surgery took place in Baltimore.
According to Soloff, Graham reconstructed the extensor hood ligament on his middle finger. The extensor tendon was unstable.
"The ligament that stabilizes that extensor tendon was torn," Soloff said. "His tendon was not injured, but the stabilizing ligament was. By reconstructing the extensor hood he was able to stabilize that tendon."
Barfield, who is 0-for-6 this season, will return to Cleveland on Wednesday and begin hand therapy on Friday.
