Carroll was hit by a pitch in Saturday's exhibition game against Houston.

Manager Eric Wedge said before the season opener Monday in Texas that Carroll will be out up to six weeks. Carroll will visit a hand specialist to determine whether surgery is necessary.

Carroll batted .277 in his first season with Cleveland. He was the club's primary second baseman for a five-week stretch when Asdrubal Cabrera was sent to the minors, and also played third base and in the outfield.

It is the first time Carroll has gone to the DL. To replace him, the Indians purchased the contract of infielder Tony Graffanino from Triple-A Columbus.
