Cleveland Indians Inside Pitch 2008-09-26
Jeremy Sowers made his last start of the season Thursday, and it looked a lot like most of Sowers' starts the last two years. Sowers gave up five runs in the first two innings of what became a 6-1 loss to Boston.

Since going 7-4 as a rookie in 2006, Sowers is 5-15 over the last two years. While there are times he seems to be making progress, Sowers has lacked the consistency required of a quality major league starter.

Sowers finished with a record of 4-9 and a 5.58 ERA this season. His pattern has been to struggle in the first inning or two, and then settle down to pitch decently after that, generally working five or six innings overall.

The Indians have given Sowers ample opportunity. Sowers started 21 games this year, third most on the staff behind Cliff Lee and Fausto Carmona.

Sowers figures to go to training camp next year with no guarantee he will be on the Opening Day roster. He likely will have to win a rotation spot by showing the consistency that he has lacked the last two years.

RED SOX 6, INDIANS 1: The Indians were held to just two hits in losing for the third consecutive night in Boston. A double by Josh Barfield and an RBI single by Jamey Carroll in the sixth inning accounted for the Indians' only hits and run. Jeremy Sowers gave up five runs in the first two innings and finished the season with a 4-9 record.
