The Indians' beleaguered bullpen was on display again Monday night in a 13-8 win over Baltimore. However, there was one new name among the relievers used.
That was veteran right-hander Brendan Donnelly, who made his debut with the Indians and his first appearance in a major league game since June 10 of last year. Tommy John surgery caused Donnelly to miss most of the 2007 season. The Indians signed him to a minor league contract during the offseason, knowing Donnelly's rehab from surgery would mean he wouldn't be able to pitch until the second half of this season.
Donnelly's debut came Monday night, when he pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
With the Indians' bullpen having been in a constant state of upheaval this season, no jobs are secure going forward. A strong showing by Donnelly in the remaining six weeks of the season could position him to win a spot in the bullpen next spring.
When healthy, Donnelly has a track record as a successful setup man. There would certainly be room for him in that role next year should he be able to make a successful comeback from Tommy John surgery.

RHP Edward Mujica, who gave up a three-run triple in the seventh inning, still got credit for the win, his first major league victory.
