The Indians signed him to a minor league contract during the offseason, knowing Donnelly's rehab from surgery would mean he wouldn't be able to pitch until the second half of this season.
Donnelly's debut came Monday night, when he pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
With the Indians' bullpen having been in a constant state of upheaval this season, no jobs are secure going forward. A strong showing by Donnelly in the remaining six weeks of the season could position him to win a spot in the bullpen next spring.
When healthy, Donnelly has a track record as a successful setup man. There would certainly be room for him in that role next year should he be able to make a successful comeback from Tommy John surgery.
INDIANS 13, ORIOLES 8: 2B Asdrubal Cabrera, OF Ben Francisco and INF Andy Gonzalez hit home runs, leading a 13-hit attack that overcame a rocky night by the pitching staff as the Indians won their fourth game in a row. RHP Edward Mujica, who gave up a three-run triple in the seventh inning, still got credit for the win, his first major league victory.
