Indianszone.com | Cleveland Indians News, indians Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --OF Grady Sizemore is sidelined because of a strained groin, suffered in the first week of training camp. Sizemore tested the groin in the Indians' first two exhibition games but then decided to shut it down for several days.
"I wasn't able to get through either game without some pain," said Sizemore, who also had to withdraw from the Team USA roster for the World Baseball Classic. Indians manager Eric Wedge said the Indians are fortunate in that they have over a month before Opening Day, so there is plenty of time to allow Sizemore's injury to heal.
"We'll be OK because we have enough time," Wedge said. "The way Grady plays he only has one gear, and when you talk about the groin, that's an injury that can get worse in a hurry.
"So we'll take our time with Grady and make sure he's 100 percent before he gets back out there."
--3B Andy Marte has signed a minor league contract but will remain in the major league training camp as a non-roster player. Marte was designated for assignment on Feb. 19 in order to make room on the roster for RHP Juan Salas, who was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay.
When Marte subsequently cleared waivers unclaimed, he was signed to a minor league contract. He is expected to start the season at Class AAA Columbus, where he will split time at third base, first base and designated hitter.
--C Martin Eervenka, a right-handed hitter from Prague, Czech Republic, has signed a contract as a non-drafted free agent. Eervenka, who is only 16 years old, will continue to compete for his club team, Kotlarka, in the 2009 season but will report periodically to the Indians' training complex in Goodyear, Ariz., to continue his development.
--INF Mark DeRosa is one of eight Indians players who will leave training camp to compete for their countries in the World Baseball Classic. DeRosa will play for Team USA. The others are LHP Rafael Perez (Dominican Republic), OF Shin-Soo Choo (Korea), OF Nick Weglarz (Canada), RHP Sung-Wei Tseng (Chinese Taipei), RHP Chen-Chang Lee (Chinese Taipei), C Damaso Espino (Panama) and RHP Paulino Espino (Panama). OF Grady Sizemore also was scheduled to play for Team USA but had to decline the opportunity because to a groin injury.
--The early indication was that Goodyear Ballpark, the Indians' new spring training home in Arizona, is a hitters' ballpark. In the first two games played in the new park the Indians were outscored 25-16.
BY THE NUMBERS: 63 -- Number of players in the Indians' major league training camp.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's very disappointing, because it's something I was really looking forward to." -- OF Grady Sizemore, on his having to decline his spot on the roster of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic because of a groin injury.
