Indianszone.com | Cleveland Indians News, indians Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Adam Miller was shut down for a week to 10 days after he was unable to pitch in his first scheduled appearance in a spring training game on Feb. 27.
Miller was diagnosed with inflammation in the middle finger of his right hand, an injury that has plagued him the last two years. Miller had surgery to repair a damaged ligament in the finger, causing him to miss most of the 2008 season. He was the frontrunner to win the one opening in the Indians' bullpen in 2008, but those chances suffered a blow with his latest injury. Indians officials hope that backing off on Miller's spring training workload will allow the inflammation in his finger to subside, in which case it's believed he would still have enough time to compete for that one spot in the bullpen.
--OF Shin-Soo Choo was limited to designated hitter duties with the Korean team in the World Baseball Classic after experiencing discomfort in his left elbow. Choo had Tommy John surgery on the elbow in 2007, and spent the first half of the 2008 season on the disabled list.
However, he played so well after coming off the disabled list last year, batting .307 with 14 home runs and 66 RBI in 317 at-bats, that he was expected to be the Indians' starting right fielder in 2009. Those plans may or may not be altered once Indians officials determine the extent of Choo's injury after he returns from play in the WBC.
--DH Travis Hafner made his first appearance in a spring training game March 6. Hafner was held out of the first week of games as he continues his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. Hafner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 14 in Birmingham, Ala. The surgery, by Dr. James Andrews, was to clean out the shoulder joint. Hafner said he expects to be close to 100 percent by Opening Day.
--LHP Cliff Lee made the most of an off day in spring training by going for a ride in an F-16 fighter jet at nearby Luke Air Force Base. Indians officials were surprisingly open to the notion of their Cy Young Award-winning pitcher rocketing over the Arizona desert as a passenger on a fighter jet. "As long as he isn't flying the plane, I have no problem with it," said general manager Mark Shapiro said.
--RHP Kerry Wood missed the first week of spring training games because of soreness in his back. It's a condition Wood says he gets every spring, and neither he nor Indians officials seemed too concerned. Wood is scheduled to make his spring debut Tuesday vs. the Angels.
BY THE NUMBERS: 4,589 -- The Indians' average home attendance through the first six games at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Ariz. Last year in Winter Haven, Fla., the Indians' average attendance per home game was 5,820.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm sure he'll throw up all over the place, but other than that we'll see what happens." -- Manager Eric Wedge, on LHP Cliff Lee's decision to go for a ride on an F-16 fighter jet during an off day at spring training. Lee survived the ride none the worse for wear.
