Cleveland Indians Notes, Quotes 2008-06-02
--RHP Paul Byrd gave up nine hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings during the Indians' 6-1 loss to the Royals Sunday.

Byrd was the losing pitcher and said he was very frustrated by his performance in a game the Indians needed to win in order to win their weekend series with Kansas City. "I didn't pitch well, and the timing was horrible," said Byrd. "We need to start winning. This was a chance for us to win a series. I need to give my team a better performance than that."

--RHP Scott Elarton pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out five. The five strikeouts are a season high for an Indians reliever.

--DH Travis Hafner is on the DL with a strained right shoulder, and manager Eric Wedge said he will not anoint a single replacement for Hafner at DH. Wedge said he will rotate a variety of players in the DH spot while Hafner is out.

--LHP C.C. Sabathia's complete-game loss Saturday was his fifth complete-game loss of his career in 18 complete games overall.

--LHP Aaron Laffey's 0.79 ERA in the month of May was the lowest of any AL pitcher.

BY THE NUMBERS: 30 -- Number of times in their first 54 games that the Indians scored three runs or less. Their record in those games was 6-24.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That club over there is playing with more confidence, and they are a little... tougher than we are now." -- Manager Eric Wedge, after the White Sox beat the Indians 6-5 on May 28.
