Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-03

Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-03
The Indians settled on LHP Scott Lewis, who won a spring training competition, to fill the lone opening in the rotation. Reigning Cy Young Award winner LHP Cliff Lee will be the No. 1 starter, although Lee had a horrible spring statistically. DH Travis Hafner, who had offseason shoulder surgery, has been healthy but hasn't shown any power. The rest of the projected starting lineup has had a solid spring offensively.

ROTATION:

1. LHP Cliff Lee

2. RHP Fausto Carmona

3. RHP Carl Pavano

4. LHP Scott Lewis

5. RHP Anthony Reyes

ROTATION ANALYSIS: Lewis beat out five other left-handers for his spot in the rotation, and if injury or poor performance requires a change in the rotation, LHP Aaron Laffey and LHP Jeremy Sowers are likely the candidates to be promoted from Class AAA Columbus. The Indians need big seasons from Lee and Carmona because the bottom three spots in the rotation are iffy considering the injury histories of Pavano and Reyes and Lewis' lack of a track record.

BULLPEN:

RHP Kerry Wood (closer)

RHP Rafael Betancourt

LHP Rafael Perez

RHP Jensen Lewis

RHP Joe Smith

RHP Masa Kobayashi

LHP Zach Jackson

BULLPEN ANALYSIS: Wood gives the Indians a power arm in the closer role for the first time in more than 10 years. The big question will be whether Wood can stay off the disabled list. Lewis, who finished last season as the closer, goes back into a setup role along with Betancourt and Perez; the latter was the most consistent reliever on the staff last year. Smith is a sidearmer acquired from the Mets who gives hitters a different look. Jackson will be the long reliever.

LINEUP:

1. CF Grady Sizemore

2. 3B Mark DeRosa

3. C Victor Martinez

4. DH Travis Hafner

5. SS Jhonny Peralta

6. RF Shin-Soo Choo

7. 1B Ryan Garko

8. LF Ben Francisco

9. 2B Asdrubal Cabrera

LINEUP ANALYSIS: Choo is slightly behind, having spent most of spring training playing for Team Korea in the World Baseball Classic. DeRosa, acquired in a trade with the Cubs, will try to bring some stability to the No. 2 spot in the order, which was unsettled last year. Hafner didn't show any power in spring training, but club officials hope he can find the stroke he used to average more than 30 home runs in a three-year period ending in 2006. Cabrera, who batted .320 in the second half of last season and is in the best shape of his career, could be poised for a breakout season.

RESERVES:

C Kelly Shoppach

OF Trevor Crowe

INF Jamey Carroll

INF Tony Graffanino/INF Josh Barfield

RESERVES ANALYSIS: Shoppach, who led American League catchers with 21 home runs last year while filling in for the injured C Victor Martinez, figures to get more than a backup catcher's allotment of at-bats, with Martinez moving to first base on those days. Barfield, who didn't hit much in the spring, was tested in the outfield to see if he could handle a true utility role. The veteran Graffanino appears to be the leading candidate for the final bench player role. Crowe, who is still considered a prospect, will fill in for injury OF David Dellucci.

ROOKIE WATCH: LHP Scott Lewis, who was 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in four September starts last year, won a spot in the rotation. OF Matt LaPorta, the top prospect acquired from Milwaukee in the CC Sabathia trade last year, will start the season playing left field at Class AAA Columbus but could be in Cleveland before long.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF David Dellucci (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list March 30.

RHP Jake Westbrook (Tommy John surgery in June 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 26. He hopes to be pitching in the big leagues again by midseason.
