Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-07

Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-07
The Indians settled on LHP Scott Lewis, who won a spring training competition, to fill the lone opening in the rotation. LHP Cliff Lee, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, will be the No. 1 starter, although Lee had a horrible spring statistically and wasn't any better on opening day. DH Travis Hafner, who had offseason shoulder surgery, has been healthy but hasn't shown much power. The rest of the projected starting lineup has had a solid spring offensively.

PLAYER NOTES:

--INF Jamey Carroll was placed on the disabled list Monday and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in his left hand. Carroll flew to Baltimore on Monday to be examined by hand specialist Dr. Tom Graham, who will determine whether surgery will be necessary. Manager Eric Wedge said Carroll will miss 4-6 weeks whether surgery is necessary or not. Carroll suffered the injury in the ninth inning of the Indians' last spring-training game Saturday vs. Houston when he was hit by a pitch from Doug Brocail. To replace Carroll on the roster the Indians purchased the contract of INF Tony Graffanino from Class AAA Columbus.

--LHP Cliff Lee was hit on the left forearm by a one-hopper hit back to the mound by DH Hank Blalock in the second inning Monday. Lee remained in the game and said getting hit in the arm did not bother him, but he gave up seven runs in the next four innings to take the loss in his first career opening-day start.

--RHP Fausto Carmona was not in uniform for Monday's opener. Carmona was serving the final game of a five-game suspension he received from Major League Baseball for his part in a brawl with the Tigers on Sept. 19 of last year.
