Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-11

Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-11
The Indians settled on LHP Scott Lewis, who won a spring training competition, to fill the lone opening in the rotation. LHP Cliff Lee, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, will be the No. 1 starter, although Lee had a horrible spring statistically and wasn't any better on opening day. DH Travis Hafner, who had offseason shoulder surgery, has been healthy but hasn't shown much power. The rest of the projected starting lineup has had a solid spring offensively.

PLAYER NEWS:

--DH Travis Hafner, who hit a home run in his last at-bat Thursday against Texas, doubled and homered in his first two at-bats Friday against Toronto. It was the first display of consistent power in the regular season for Hafner, who had offseason surgery on his right shoulder.

--RHP Scott Lewis gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings in his start in the Indians' home opener Friday. Lewis' 8.31 ERA, however, is the lowest among Indians' starting pitchers, better than LHP Cliff Lee (12.60), RHP Fausto Carmona (10.80), and RHP Carl Pavano (81.00).

--OF Shin-Soo Choo hit his first home run of the season Friday, one of three home runs for the Indians in the game. The Indians have hit eight home runs in their last two games, and lost both games.

--OF Ben Francisco was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning Friday. Indians hitters have been hit by pitches five times in their first four games. Last year the Indians set a major league record by getting by pitches 103 times.

MEDICAL WATCH:

INF Jamey Carroll (broken left hand) went on the 15-day disabled list April 6. He will be out four to six weeks, but he won't need surgery.

OF David Dellucci (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list March 30.

RHP Jake Westbrook (Tommy John surgery in June 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 26. He hopes to be pitching in the big leagues again by midseason.
