Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-30

Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-04-30
The Indians offense, which had been among the best in the American League the first two weeks of the season, has struggled to score over the last week as the team continues to languish at the bottom of the Central Division. Those offensive woes coupled with an under-performing bullpen have made it difficult for the Indians to put together any kind of winning streak.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Fausto Carmona pitched 6 2/3 innings Wednesday vs. Boston, allowing two runs, the best of his five starts this season. "He was very good, and he did it against a very good hitting team," manager Eric Wedge said.

--DH Travis Hafner, who missed most of last year with weakness in his right shoulder, necessitating offseason surgery, was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with the same condition. "He's been having some soreness and fatigue in the shoulder. We don't think it's anything serious. Hopefully just a two-week thing," manager Eric Wedge said. Hafner will be examined Monday by Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery on Hafner on Oct. 14.

--LHP Rich Rundles was recalled from Class AAA Columbus on Wednesday to fill the roster vacancy created when DH Travis Hafner was placed on the disabled list. The addition of Rundles, who was 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in seven appearances for Columbus, means the Indians had 14 pitchers on their roster going into Wednesday night's game with Boston.

MEDICAL WATCH:

DH Travis Hafner (weakness in right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He might return as soon as he's eligible, manager Eric Wedge said.

RHP Scott Lewis (strained left elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He is unlikely to return before mid-May.

INF Jamey Carroll (broken left hand) went on the 15-day disabled list April 6. He will be out four to six weeks, but he won't need surgery.

OF David Dellucci (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list March 30. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Columbus on April 20, and he is likely to be activated in early May.

RHP Jake Westbrook (Tommy John surgery in June 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 26. He hopes to be pitching in the big leagues again by midseason.
