Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-05-02

Cleveland Indians Roster Report 2009-05-02
The Indians offense, which had been among the best in the American League the first two weeks of the season, has struggled to score over the last week as the team continues to languish at the bottom of the Central Division. Those offensive woes coupled with an under-performing bullpen have made it difficult for the Indians to put together any kind of winning streak.

PLAYER NEWS:

--OF David Dellucci was activated off the disabled list Friday, replacing DH Travis Hafner, who was placed on the DL Thursday with soreness and fatigue in his right shoulder. Dellucci, who had been on the DL since the start of the season with a strained left calf, was on a rehab assignment at Class AAA Columbus, where in 29 at bats he hit .414. Dellucci will get some at bats in left field as well as some occasional starts at DH. Dellucci celebrated his return Friday with a four-hit night, matching his career high, in the Indians' win over Detroit.

--SS Jhonny Peralta hit his first home run of the season in the third inning Friday. It's the 86th of his career, breaking Woodie Held's club record for most career home runs by a shortstop. Peralta, who had been tied with Held with 85 homers, was the last Indians regular this season to hit a home run.

--RHP Carl Pavano pitched 7 1/3 innings in his start Friday versus Detroit. That's Pavano's longest outing of the season. He had not pitched more than six innings in any of his first four starts.

--RHP Jensen Lewis, who has been plagued by the home run ball, gave up another homer Friday night, in the eighth inning, a three-run blast by Detroit's Miguel Cabrera. Lewis, who gave up eight home runs in 66 innings last season, has already given up six homers in 12 2/3 innings this year.

--OF Shin-Soo Choo hit in the cleanup spot in place of DH Travis Hafner on Wednesday. Choo is a candidate to remain in the No. 4 spot in place of Hafner, who was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with soreness and fatigue in his right shoulder.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF David Dellucci (left calf strain) went on the 15-day disabled list March 30. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Columbus on April 20, and he was activated on May 1.

DH Travis Hafner (weakness in right shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 29. He might return as soon as he's eligible, manager Eric Wedge said.

RHP Scott Lewis (strained left elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list April 11. He is unlikely to return before mid-May.

INF Jamey Carroll (broken left hand) went on the 15-day disabled list April 6. He will be out four to six weeks, but he won't need surgery.

RHP Jake Westbrook (Tommy John surgery in June 2008) went on the 60-day disabled list March 26. He hopes to be pitching in the big leagues again by midseason.
