Diamond market: DeWitt's making his case

Diamond market: DeWitt's making his case
Fantasy baseball waivers and the acquisition of fantasy baseball free agents can make or break a season. You may have adjusted your fantasy baseball cheat sheets over and over during spring training. If your team remains the same after Opening Day, though, you'll probably have trouble competing in your rotisserie baseball league. Do you need to add players to replace your fantasy baseball busts? Which players can you ignore?

Key

Acquire - Add player (in most circumstances)
Watch - Track player; consider adding if trend continues
Pass - Do not add player (in most circumstances)

Catchers

Chris Iannetta, Colorado

Tuesday marked the third straight time Iannetta started behind the plate for the Rockies. In that stretch, he has five hits and four RBI, boosting his average to .362 on the season. Manager Clint Hurdle's been riding his hot hand lately, to the detriment of Yorvit Torrealba. Iannetta doesn't have the starting job locked up, so avoid him in shallow mixed leagues, but grab him in deeper mixed leagues - especially two-catcher formats - if he continues to get regular at-bats.

Second Basemen

Adam Kennedy, St. Louis

A .364 average in his last 10 games has Kennedy hitting .325 on the season - almost 50 points higher than his career average. Busch Stadium, where he carries a .396 mark, has been a big part of his success. However, there's little else he brings to the table. He hasn't hit a home run this year and only has 13 RBI. He's crossed the plate just 10 times and stolen only two bases. Still, his average could give you a boost so grab him in any NL-only leagues if you need help in that department.

Third Basemen

Melvin Mora, Baltimore

Through Tuesday, Mora's hitting .364 (8-for-22) in May with one home run and three RBI. This is slowly raising his average up from the .239 mark he ended with in April. However, there are a few reasons to avoid him, at least in shallow mixed leagues. He's struggled at home (13-for-65) and the team just returned from a six-game road trip (where he's hitting .318), which could be one reason for his boost in stats. Also, three of the four runs he's scored in his last 10 games also came Sunday. He's a productive player in AL-only leagues, but avoid him for now in all mixed formats. You can consider picking him up in deep mixed leagues if he continues to hit well.

Blake DeWitt, Los Angeles Dodgers

Injuries have handed a starting job to DeWitt this year, and he's taken advantage of the opportunity. He's hitting .419 (13-for-31) with two home runs and 13 RBI in his last 10 games, raising his average to .317 on the season. Fantasy owners should be aware that Nomar Garciaparra (calf) has resumed baseball activities and Andy LaRoche (thumb) continues to make progress at Triple-A Las Vegas. DeWitt's strong play has prompted manager Joe Torre to back off his stance that Garciaparra would be the starter when returns, which makes this an interesting situation to watch. DeWitt should be taken in NL-only leagues, but he's still just worth monitoring in deeper mixed leagues.

Outfielders

Brad Hawpe, Colorado

May's seen a complete change in Hawpe's game. After hitting .239 (21-for-88) in April, he already has seven hits - including two home runs - in only 20 at-bats. He's also driven in six runs while scoring six. He might not be available in most leagues, but there is a chance an owner dropped him after his slow start. If they did, they were quick to forget the .291 average, 29 home runs and 116 RBI he had last year. Grab him if he is still available in any leagues.

Juan Pierre, Los Angeles Dodgers

Hitting .458 in May, Pierre's at least temporarily jumped past Andre Ethier for a starting spot in left field. The speedster's stolen five bases already while scoring seven runs in the Dodgers recent offensive awakening. The Dodgers team batting average (.284 - third in the league) means there should be plenty of chances for him to score runs hitting at the top of the order. He might not be available in many leagues, but if he is scoop him up immediately, especially if you need help in stolen bases.

Fred Lewis, San Francisco

Situated at the top of the Giants order, Lewis is quietly putting together a solid season. He's contributing in three major areas (runs, stolen bases, average), which is a boost to fantasy owners looking for outfield help. His location in the batting order limits his ability to drive in runs, but if you need to boost your runs or average totals, give him a look. He should be picked up in all deep mixed leagues. He's struggling a bit in May (.167 average in 12 at-bats), but keep an eye on him in shallow mixed leagues to see if he can continue posting solid fantasy totals.

Ben Francisco, Cleveland

With outfielder Jason Michaels designated for assignment, the team called up outfielder Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo to take his spot on the roster. Francisco gives the team coverage in both left and right field, which should mean more chances to start. He also hits left and right-handed pitchers about equally, so there's no need for him to be part of a platoon at one position. He likely won't give the Tribe's offense a big boost (he was hitting just .228 with six RBI in 92 at-bats for Buffalo), but he's a player to look at in AL-only leagues due to his potential for at-bats.

Starting Pitchers

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox

Floyd's no-hit bid ended on a double by Twins catcher Joe Mauer in the ninth inning Monday. It might have been a disappointment for him, but for fantasy owners it was an encouraging sign after the young righty had given up eight runs in his last two starts (12 innings). His start to the season (1.40 ERA through his first 19 1/3 innings) garnered some attention, but not likely the same kind his recent outing will. He isn't a great strikeout pitcher (just 19 in 39 2/3 innings), but he's contributed in every other category this year. Grab him in all formats.

Greg Smith, Oakland

The first-year lefty's made some solid contributions to the Athletics' cause this season. Only once in six starts has he allowed more than two earned runs, and his ERA currently sits at 2.54. He followed up his first career complete game April 29 by allowing only three hits and one earned run in six innings against the Rangers. Look to grab him in leagues of all formats, though there could be a few bumps in the road once teams get a scouting report on him.

AL-only: Acquire

Andy Sonnanstine, Tampa Bay

It might not be pretty all the time, but if you're looking for wins then look no further than Sonnanstine. His ERA is 4.63 and four times in seven starts this year he's allowed four or more runs. However, the Rays have given him great run support. In fact, only once this year have they scored less than five runs in his start. He isn't a dazzling candidate, but if you need wins or WHIP (1.25), then he's a decent starter in deep mixed or AL-only leagues. Keep an eye on him in shallow mixed leagues to see if he can tighten up the runs allowed. He did have a three-start stretch (23 1/3 innings) in April where he gave up only four runs. If that happens again, grab him in shallow mixed leagues.

Tim Wakefield, Boston

Wakefield grabbed fantasy owners' attention when he held the Tigers to just two hits and no runs over eight innings Tuesday. His ERA is 2.57 over his last three starts (21 innings), though he has just seven strikeouts against nine walks. He's even more attractive when you consider he pitches in front of one of the top offenses in baseball. Grab him in deep mixed leagues if you need pitching help.

Sidney Ponson, Texas

There must be plenty of happy people in Aruba lately as their native son has strung together three strong outings to open the season. Over his 20 1/3 innings this year, he's allowed just three earned runs while striking out 11. He's still a bit of a wild card based on his previous escapades, but for now he's someone to keep an eye on in all mixed leagues. Remember, he's just one year removed from a 6.93 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 2-5 record in seven starts for the Twins.

Relief Pitchers

B.J. Ryan, Toronto

You might be surprised to see Ryan on this list. His inclusion comes due to the fact he's been cleared to pitch on consecutive days. However, the team's said they'll remain cautious with Ryan and not work him in multiple innings for the rest of 2008. This lowers the value for others in the Toronto bullpen, mainly relievers Jeremy Accardo, Scott Downs and Jesse Carlson as they should see even fewer save chances. If Ryan's somehow available, snap him up. If you already own him, expect more value from him as he should be making more appearances for you.

AL-only: Acquire

Taylor Buchholz, Colorado

Buchholz recorded his first career save Sunday, and the former starter now has an ERA of 1.93 and a WHIP of 0.96 in 18 2/3 innings. He likely won't get regular save opportunities, but manager Clint Hurdle isn't afraid to use him in a save situation if closer Brian Fuentes is unavailable. For the record, Fuentes has two blown saves (both before taking over for Manny Corpas as the team's closer) and sports a 2.40 ERA, though he's been scored on in just two of his 16 appearances. Grab Buchholz in any NL-only leagues and keep an eye on him in all mixed formats.
