Colorado (30-42) is in last place in the NL West after reaching the World Series last season. However, the Rockies have won 10 of 14 and clinched their fifth straight series victory with Wednesday's 4-2 win over Cleveland (33-39).
"Every time we start a series, that's what's brought up - try to win the series," said Jeff Baker, who homered and scored three runs Wednesday. "That's what we did last year toward the end and it worked out for us."
Included in their current run was a series win against the White Sox in Chicago. The Rockies, who took two of three in that set, are 6-2 in interleague play and have outscored their AL foes 36-20.
Colorado is on the verge of its first interleague sweep since it took three games at home against the New York Yankees from June 19-21 last season.
Omar Quintanilla chipped in two hits and two RBIs for the Rockies on Wednesday. Quintanilla and Baker have been helping to fill in for Troy Tulowitzki and Clint Barmes, who are both expected to be back within a week.
"They're playing well, and that's what you want," manager Clint Hurdle said. "The more good players you have on the team the better your chances are of winning. They're making the most of their opportunities."
The Indians lost for the third time in four games Wednesday. Jamey Carroll doubled in a run for Cleveland, which has managed just seven runs in its last three losses.
"We are hitting the ball good and getting opportunities. We're just not getting the big hit," Carroll said. "Some of it has been their pitchers have made the pitches when they needed to."
Jeremy Sowers (0-1, 7.23 ERA) will try to help Cleveland avoid the sweep in his fifth start of the season and third since his most recent call-up from Triple-A Buffalo. He has allowed nine runs in 8 1-3 innings in his last two starts, including four in 4 1-3 innings of the Indians' 9-5 win over San Diego on Friday.
Sowers, who has never faced the Rockies, is 0-2 with an 8.51 ERA in five career interleague starts.
Colorado counters with Jorge De La Rosa (1-3, 6.89), who earned himself another start after striking out a career-high eight in five innings without getting a decision in the Rockies' 2-0 road win over the White Sox on Saturday.
The left-hander started the season in the rotation, but was banished to the bullpen after going 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA in five starts. However, his performance against the White Sox convinced Colorado to scrap its plans to call up Glendon Rusch from Triple-A Colorado Springs to start the series finale.
"We gave him another opportunity, and he came back and he stepped up," Hurdle told the Rockies' official Web site. "We'll see what kind of command he has, see if he can repeat that type of performance as far as rhythm, command of the zone, quality of the pitches, and see where it goes from there."
De La Rosa has struggled against the Indians in the past, going 1-3 with a 7.67 ERA in six starts. He is 0-3 with a 6.95 ERA in 10 career interleague outings, including five starts.
