Shapiro says umpires made right homer call

General Manager Mark Shapiro said Monday the umpires and MLB's replay process were correct in ruling that Jorge Posada's disputed home run in the seventh inning Sunday at Yankee Stadium was indeed a homer and not fan interference.

"I've talked to Mike Port [assistant MLB umpire supervisor] twice today," Shapiro said. "We saw a second feed from the YES Network and it appears the ball was over the wall and over Trevor Crowe's glove."

The Indians were able to study the feed from YES Network, the network that carries Yankees games, after acquiring it from their satellite room at Progressive Field. While the SportsTime Ohio replay was from home plate and indicated Crowe was interfered with when he jumped for the ball, the YES replay came from the center-field fence with the camera pointing toward right field.

"To focus on that one play would be an excuse," said Shapiro, a strong proponent of the replay process. "We didn't execute with our situational hitting and our bullpen."

Posada's homer turned a 3-2 Indians lead into a 4-3 deficit, which eventually turned into a 7-3 loss. The 4-9 Indians split the four-game series at new Yankee Stadium.

Here's what Shapiro had to say on other subjects regarding the Tribe:

There are no immediate plans to option lefty reliever Rafael Perez to the minors because no one is pitching well enough at Class AAA Columbus to take his place. Perez is 0-1 with a 16.71 ERA. He has allowed 13 runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

Shapiro, who says the bullpen was overworked by the rotation's poor start, still isn't happy with the pen.

"Outside of Kerry Wood, every reliever has given us a marginal to poor performance," he said.

Shapiro said the Indians' March and April record under manager Eric Wedge (69-81) is under review. He said Wedge has a couple of ideas of how to adjust spring training next year.
