On paper, the Red Sox lineup last night - Julio Lugo, Rocco Baldelli, Jeff Bailey, Nick Green and George Kottaras included - will never be confused with "Murderers' Row."
But not even the 1927 Yankees accomplished what Boston did in the sixth inning of its 13-3 win over Cleveland at rainy Fenway - score 12 times before making an out.
By the time Mike Lowell grounded weakly to second, the Red Sox had plated a dozen runs on nine hits. Jason Bay had a three-run homer and an RBI double, Bailey a two-run double, and Baldelli, Kottaras and Dustin Pedroia two-run singles.
The 12 runs before an out tied a modern-day (post-1900) MLB record set by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1953, and broke the AL record of 11 by the 1925 Tigers. The 12 runs were also the most scored by the Red Sox in an inning since they had 14 against the Marlins in 2003.
"Everyone was just hitting the ball," said Lugo (3 for 5), who led off the sixth with a single, and tripled and scored Boston's first run in the first.
According to Lugo, Lowell was upset in the dugout after making the first out of the sixth.
"But somebody had to make an out," Lugo said.
Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield (4-1) looked sharp early on - he didn't allow a hit until the fourth - but lost his control briefly in the fifth when Cleveland took a 2-1 lead on a single, double, passed ball, hit by pitch and sacrifice fly.
The knuckleballer actually walked another batter and threw a wild pitch in the inning, but got out of a two-on, one-out jam with a 6-4-3 double play.
Jeremy Sowers lost his season debut for the Indians. He was replaced by Masa Kobayashi, who didn't retire a batter while allowing five runs. Kobayashi was replaced by Matt Herges, who was greeted by Bay's eighth homer.
Ortiz late scratch
David Ortiz was scratched from the Red Sox lineup after his neck became stiff during batting practice. He was replaced by Green, who played shortstop. Lugo was moved to DH.
Ortiz said after the game that he expects to play tonight against Tampa Bay (7:10 p.m., NESN Plus).
"He was trying to figure out how he was going to look at the pitcher," manager Terry Francona said. "And it just wasn't happening."
Injury update
Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury also got the night off. Youkilis missed his third straight game with a sore left side, while Ellsbury missed his second game with a tight right hamstring.
Francona said Ellsbury will probably play today, but chose not to start him last night with the Indians throwing Sowers, a lefty.
Bailey (2 for 4) took Youkilis' spot at first base, while Baldelli was activated from the 15-day disabled list to play center field. To make room for Baldelli, the Red Sox optioned outfielder Jonathan Van Every to Pawtucket.
Dice-K continues rehab
Daisuke Matsuzaka, on the 15-day DL since April 15 with a right shoulder strain, will make his second rehab start for Pawtucket at Columbus on Sunday. After that, Francona said Matzuzaka will remain with the PawSox before his next Triple-A start instead of joining the Red Sox on the West Coast.
Matsuzaka threw 2-2/3 scoreless innings in his first rehab start, allowing two hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Lopez strugging
Francona said he isn't that concerned about Javier Lopez's 0-2 record and 10.24 ERA. The Red Sox lefty has allowed eight runs in his last 2-1/3 innings, including a run on two hits in the eighth last night.
"We know he's better than some of the outings he's had," Francona said.
Francona said he believes Lopez is better when he faces more than one batter in an inning. Lefties are 8 for 18 (.444) against Lopez.
