Surprising Marte in the mix for 2010

Surprising Marte in the mix for 2010 Indians INSIDER

Detroit - If the Indians want to keep Andy Marte past this season, all they have to do is keep him right where he is today - on the 40-man roster.

If they take him off the 40-man roster for any reason between now and Opening Day 2010, they have to expose him to waivers because he's out of options. If he would clear waivers, the Indians could assign him to Class AAA Columbus or Marte could opt for free agency.

In a season of disappointment and upheaval, Marte's rise from afterthought to starting first baseman is the most unlikely and inspiring.

Has he done enough to convince the Indians to keep him for next year?

"Andy has done a good job building off his success at Columbus," said Chris Antonetti, Indians assistant general manager. "There is still a month left in the season and we're looking forward to see what he can do with regular at-bats and playing time."

Marte entered Wednesday night's game against the Tigers hitting .274 (23-for-84) with two doubles, one triple, four homers and 16 RBI in 24 games.

He hit .327 (98-for-300) with 24 doubles, 18 homers and 66 RBI at Columbus in 82 games.

Marte has hit all four of his homers on this 10-game trip.

"From where I was in spring training to where I am now, I never thought that would happen," Marte said.

Marte was designated for assignment in spring training, but he went unclaimed. So, he returned to the Indians and started the year at Columbus.

The Indians have an opening at first base for next season. And Marte is in the process of making himself one of their options.

Still talking: Manager Eric Wedge said no decision has been made on whether Grady Sizemore will have surgery on his left elbow before the end of the season on Oct. 4.

"We'll know sooner rather than later," Wedge said.

Sizemore said Tuesday that he'd like to finish the season.

"You know he's always going to want to play and you know he wants to finish what he started," said Wedge, "but we have to make a decision to make sure none of this comes into next year. We want to give this plenty of time.

"If that means we have to shut him down early, then that's what we're going to do."

As to why the Indians haven't already done so, Wedge said: "What's the point? You're a better team with him. The only reason you'd have to do it earlier is if it was the best thing for next year."

Wedge said that was never an issue.

What's in a name?

Tribe catcher Wyatt Toregas received his first name in an unusual fashion.

"When I was born, my dad asked my mother, 'What do you want to name him?' " said Toregas.

Toregas' mother didn't have an answer.

"My dad said, 'OK, we'll name him after the first movie that comes on TV,' " said Toregas. "The movie, was 'Gun Fight at the OK Corral.' I'm named after Wyatt Earp. My dad didn't like Virgil [Earp], Morgan [Earp] or Doc [Holliday].

"I'm lucky some chick flick didn't come on with all girls names."

When asked what his father's name is, Toregas laughed and said: "Bill. Thanks, dad."

Toregas, according to, is one of only three players to reach the big leagues with the first name of Wyatt. The other two, Watty Lee (1901-1904) and Roxy Snipes (1923), went by nicknames. Their given names were Wyatt Arnold Lee and Wyatt Eure Snipes.

He's the man: Class AA Akron manager Mike Sarbaugh has been named Eastern League manager of the year. The Aeros, who already have clinched first place in the Southern Division, went into Wednesday night's game with a league-best 83-53 record.

Sarbaugh is in his second season at Akron.

Finally: Marte and Jordan Brown have been named to the Class AAA International League postseason All-Star team. Brown is hitting .333 (134-for-402) with 35 doubles, 12 homers and 62 RBI at Columbus.
