Inside spring training camp:

Bonderman optimistic: Detroit Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman said the healing of the nerve causing problems in his right shoulder is the key to when he returns. "When that nerve heals all the way up, I'll be OK," Bonderman said Tuesday morning in Lakeland, Fla., after applying ice and electric stimulation to his shoulder. "But I'm told nerves don't heal the same on people, and so it could be a couple days or weeks." Bonderman is taking the optimistic approach, saying he hopes to play "light catch in a couple days" after the anti-inflammatory medication does its job. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Bonderman would be monitored and there was no rush with the April 6 opener at Toronto more than a month away. "He could start the fifth game (of the year) at home," Leyland said, referring to the April 10 home opener against the Texas Rangers.

Clevlen challenges for spot: Brent Clevlen, starting in right field Tuesday because Magglio Ordonez was playing for the opposition, Team Venezuela, had an RBI double off Tigers teammate Armando Galarraga in the third inning and a two-run single the next inning. They were the only hits Galarraga allowed. "He's been having a pretty good spring so far," Leyland said. "At some point, it will be decision time." Clevlen, hitting .500 with a team-high five RBIs, hasn't struck out in 11 at-bats. In 73 regular season at-bats with Detroit, he has 30 strikeouts.
